Cold air outside, dry heat inside: winter is when our kids’ skin feels tightest. This is the one-page checklist we keep on the fridge from November to March. Save it, print it, and check things off as you go.
Bath time
☐ Lukewarm water, not hot
☐ Keep baths short, about 5 to 10 minutes
☐ Gentle, fragrance-free cleanser only where needed
☐ Pat dry with a soft towel, don’t rub
☐ Moisturize within 3 minutes of getting out, while skin is still a little damp
Bedtime
☐ A thicker cream or ointment on the driest spots before pajamas
☐ Soft, breathable cotton pajamas
☐ Keep the bedroom cool, not overheated
☐ Run a humidifier and clean it regularly
☐ Trim nails short to limit scratching
Laundry
☐ Fragrance-free, dye-free detergent
☐ Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets
☐ Add an extra rinse cycle
☐ Wash new clothes and bedding before the first wear
Getting dressed and going out
☐ Soft cotton layer under wool or scratchy fabrics
☐ Moisturize hands and cheeks before going outside
☐ Gloves or mittens on cold, windy days
☐ Change out of wet clothes and socks quickly
Every day
☐ Moisturize at least twice a day, even on good-skin days
☐ Drink water and keep a water bottle handy
☐ Jot down new soaps, foods, or fabrics if skin acts up, so you can spot patterns
